Perfume and Paints to be banned across Lambeth!

Under draconian new powers intended to be implemented by Lambeth Council on 17th August, you could be fined up to £1000 for buying or using perfume, paint, incense sticks, or any other 'intoxicating' substance in any public space within Lambeth. Lambeth Council are seeking to introduce a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in order to crack down on the growing use of nitrous oxide (a legal high) in the borough and the associated litter and anti-social behaviour. However, the PSPO defines...

It’s finally here! – Thanks for helping us get this far (now please go and Vote Pirate)

To all who have helped, engaged with, and contacted the Pirate Party over the last few months - Thank You! As a voter in Vauxhall - I hope that you feel that the concerns and issues you raised have been heard and that you have had a response from all parties that enables you to make an informed and educated choice when voting tomorrow. Naturally I would encourage you to Vote Pirate in this election. I believe that the way in which we are engaging in democracy through crowd-sourcing our man...

Vauxhall General Election Campaign – Your Help Needed

Mark Chapman is the Pirate Party's PPC for Vauxhall in the upcoming general election. Over the coming weeks we need to raise awareness with just under 76,000 electors about who we are and why they should vote for Mark. We need your help! It doesn't matter where you are, or how much or how little time you have, there are ways to help. Online Elections are old-fashioned affairs carried out in arguably tired traditional ways - but that doesn't have to be the case for us. We all have a v...

Libraries in a digital age – Reinvigorate, don’t Reduce

Lambeth Council announced yesterday that they intend to sell 2 of the Borough’s libraries (Waterloo and Minet), and cut the funding for another 3 (with a vague hope that local ‘Friends’ groups and volunteers take over the running of them). Whilst this has been put out as ‘prospective’ it is clear from the fact that they are already moving the Brixton Archives from Minet Library to Brixton that this is the long-term intention. The background for this is a cut in funding for ‘cultural’ serv...

The wrong bridge, in the wrong location, being funded in the wrong manner…

Who could possibly be against the planned Garden Bridge when it is described as a ‘…stunning new public garden and pedestrian crossing… a vital new route between north and south London and feature plants, trees, woodland and meandering walkways to be used and enjoyed by all.’ (From the Garden Bridge website) Except that it is not nearly that straightforward. I have been observing the arguments on both sides for a while now, trying to gather enough evidence (rather than just marketing blurb) t...

New Year, New Start, New Politics

Dear Londoner, Hope that you are well and a very Happy New Year to you. As I am sure that you are aware, there is a General Election in just 4 months time. That might sound like a long time, but I know that it will go very quickly indeed and we need to use that time as well as we can. We have already seen just a couple of days into the Year the main parties launching manifesto ideas and posters and it feels as though the 'unofficial' campaign has already begun in earnest. As the nominated ...

Lambeth Living to be brought back ‘in house’

In a surprise move Lambeth Council have announced that the Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) that manages housing in the Borough - Lambeth Living - is to be brought back 'in-house' under Council control with the ALMO being dismantled. Whilst the press release is naturally positive, the fact that the Council feel it necessary to bring Lambeth Living back in-house, despite having a policy elsewhere (Communications, Events etc.) to spin out private sector businesses, suggests that they ...

Mark Chapman selected as GE2015 Candidate for Vauxhall

The London branch of the Pirate Party have selected Mark Chapman to stand as the Pirate candidate in the Vauxhall Constituency at the forthcoming General Election in 2015. Having introduced Pirate politics to Lambeth for the first time at the May 2014 elections by standing in the Vassall ward, Mark is seeking to build on the 1.4% share of the vote he received then. A local School Governor, member of his local residents association and father of 2 small boys Mark has lived in the Vauxhall Cons...

By-election in Knight’s Hill, Lambeth (14th August)

This Thursday (14th August) there is a by-election in the Knight's Hill ward of the London Borough of Lambeth. Whilst the Pirate Party are not standing a candidate in this by-election we would encourage anyone who is eligible to cast their vote and make their voice heard. Sources close to Lambeth Council indicate that they are anticipating a somewhat derisory turnout of less than 20% - that's less than 1 in 5 people choosing to cast a vote. We believe that when participation in democracy is as l...
