So one of the worst kept ‘secrets’ in London politics has finally been confirmed – London Mayor Boris Johnson is seeking a seat to stand in at the 2015 General Election. As he has also confirmed that he would serve out the remainder of his term as London Mayor it means that (if elected as an MP) he would spend a year combining the two jobs.
Whilst Ken Livingstone did exactly the same thing the other way around as he was elected Mayor in 2000 whilst still an MP for Brent this highlights yet again the common mindset of the political classes. It highlights the view that politics is an opportunity for personal maneuvering and advancement rather than a serious job to be done which actually matters and affects peoples lives. In any other sphere of life you would resign from one job in order to take up the new one, you wouldn’t ‘job-share’ for a year and politics should be no different.
We at the Pirate Party believe that in politics, people come first. This is why if he is elected as an MP we will call on Boris to resign the Mayoralty to enable a full-time committed candidate to take on the serious role of running London for the benefit of all Londoners.
